November PARTY!

These kids are having fun at our November party! A party for all the great work all of the students have done. We had a lot of fun! In this picture you can see some of our own fifth graders are reading to some of the younger kids. It was one of the stations for the older kids to read to the younger kids. They read books that they were interested in like Clifford and the fall festival.

In this picture Jennifer and Brooke are reading to a couple so they would have some one.
They would read the thanksgiving feast or books like that. They would let the little ones read to help their reading level.

A day at Gifted

First of all, in our Gifted program we are studying economics. So when we piled onto the bus we all were taken to Walmart where our Gifted teachers awaited us. First we were lead by a manager inside, shortly after we were discussed to not to touch anything or wander off. We were first led to the pharmacy and learned how they made a profit how they they kept the stock and demand up and how they kept everything in order. Then we went to this room where they kept stuff frozen so they wouldn't be bad when the freezers broke. (The pizza freezer broke there was lots of pizza!) The room was -11 degrees! It was very cold and we even got to go inside. Then they talked about how stuff was shipped and what would happen if they didn't get all the items they wanted.  After that we went to the bakery and they gave us free cookies they were so nice! Then we went off to the different types of markets they had such as Meats,Dairy, and Produce. Produce was probably the most difficult job because they had to check if the food was bad or not. Produce is all foods and veggies. Then it was time for the scavenger hunt! We each were split up into teams and given a recipe for a desert. Then we had to find those items and see which brand they were which brand had the most price and the lowest price. After that we went to the checkout isles and got a $1 treat and then we walked back to school and continued on the day!

Main Idea Unit

We are kicking off our main idea unit in reading.  We won't just be reading random articles, but we're going to be focusing on ancient Egypt!  I think everyone will really enjoy reading and learning about the Egyptians while working our way through main idea!

Today, Reading 1 worked with me to create their Success Criteria.  Success Criteria is a list of things students need to be able to do in order to be successful!  We started by looking at the main idea Common Core standard- 5.RI.2.  In order to be successful and master this standard, they decided that you must do these things: read the text, find 2 or more main ideas, find key words or details, and write a summary.

We also looked at their pre-test results.  For the pre-test, students read the article on NewsELA.com, Kids Love Their Robohands.  Most students were able to pick out one main idea and one detail, but they had no idea that 5th grade required them to find TWO or MORE main ideas and several details!

We are starting small to grow big.  Today's article just required them to find one main idea.  I want every student to be able to master finding one main idea before they are asked to find two or more.  I also had them work on finding two details. The level of difficulty will continue to increase until everyone has made progress on this standard!

The Hungry Caterpillar Play

Today we went to a first grade and a kindergarten program they sang about food and played out the hungry caterpillar. They were so cute they sang about 6 songs.
